If you’re looking for ways to save money on your grocery bill you’re in the same boat as many. Saving money is not a one time thing. It requires some work and effort on your part but once you get into a groove you will hopefully see the benefits on your grocery bill.
As someone who officially became a work from home mom a few months ago I am always looking for ways to save money. We are a family of 5 and I also watch 1-2 kids during the week so it’s fair to say that we go through a lot of food. As I work through my way of trying to save money, these are some of the things that so far have helped me.
Get in on the Apps
There are a few Apps that I like to use but my favourite ones are Flipp, Caddle, and Checkout 51. Flipp is great because it has all of the flyers uploaded into one place. You can search for specific items and you can price match before you go shopping.
Apps like Caddle and Checkout 51 are ones that don’t give you instant savings but will give you cash back on certain purchases. The trick to these ones are to be consistent and not buy stuff that’s on the list just because. While it seems like a lot of output for no return I have seen people cash in $150 at times. Work smarter not harder!
Customer Appreciation Days
There are 3 major grocery stores in Edmonton that offer 10%-15% off your grocery bill when you spend a certain amount of money. Every month you’ll find us shopping at Save-On-Foods getting what we need for the month such as meat, pasta, sauces, baking supplies and more. At the beginning of this month we saved $150..that’s huge when you’re looking to save money! I’m a big fan of Customer Appreciation Days and you can read more about it here.
H & W produce
With several locations across Edmonton, H & W produce has been one of my new favourite places to shop. On my last shopping trip here I purchased 5lbs of blueberries..yes we love blueberries in this house! I can easily purchase enough friut and veggies for the week for under $40. See where the closest H & W is closest to you www.handwproduce.com
Wecan Food Basket
The Wecan Food Basket is an affordable monthly food basket with several pickup locations around Edmonton. In order to participate you need to purchase the $5 yearly membership. Prices are low because it’s a large group of people buying which makes the groceries less. You can expect the following in your food basket depending on what you choose and you can purchase as many food baskets as you want.
- Fresh meat basket – $15 (3 cuts of fresh meat – generally .5kg beef, chicken & pork)
- Fresh produce basket – $10 (3 seasonal fruits & 3 seasonal vegetables)
- Complete meat & produce basket – $25 (Everything mentioned in the above baskets)

Meatless Meals for Meat Eaters
While protein is important to have with some of our meals it doesn’t have to be a meat protein and sometimes meals don’t even have to include a protein. (It has taken me a long time to get past this) Chilli made out of legumes, Quinoa stuffed peppers, bean tacos and so much more.

Collective Kitchen
Groups that get together, pay a fee and make a couple of meals. Each class that I have seen is roughly $3-$8 depending on that is being make. You can join one that is already established or start one in your community. It’s a great way to make some meals super cheap and lower that grocery bill!

Our goal this month is to stick within our $650 budget for food (we’ve been a little lax..). Do you think we can do it? What are some ways that you keep your grocery budget in check?
