Last month when I heard that Ohana Donuterie had opened in Old Strathcona I put it on my list of places to check out with the family, and last night that’s what we did.
When you step into Ohana Donuterie it is bright, and spacious with decor that shows their love for Hawaii. With plenty of seating available, the location is very family friendly right down to the free parking out front.
What started out as a donut truck in June 2017, Ohana Donuterie was started by two guys named Adam and Kevin and serves traditional hot and fresh malasada donuts from Hawaii. The recipe that they use is more than 130 years old.
Ordering at Ohana Donuterie
The fresh malasada donuts (yeast donuts) are made to order by first choosing which kind of donut that you want. Keeping it simple, donut options are Original (Cinnamon Sugar), Chocolate Dip, Vanilla Dip, or Plain Donut (no sugar or icing).
Next, you choose your filling, which is a choice of Coconut Cream, Vanilla Cream, Chocolate Cream, Vanilla, Chocolate, or you can opt out of a filling.
Once your order is complete you can watch your donuts being made through the window that looks right into the kitchen.
Coffee, Espresso, & more
Ohana Donuterie also offers signature & regular espresso beverages, coffee, and other hot beverages. Both Kris and I ordered a signature espresso – Kris a Macadamia Macchiato and me a Caramel Latte.
We are by no means coffee experts but the barista definitely knew what she was doing and it’s was good enough that I would go out of my way just to grab a coffee from there again.
How we liked it
The kids and Kris each ordered a chocolate dip donut with vanilla cream, I had a vanilla dip with chocolate cream, and we also ordered an Original (Cinnamon Sugar) as well.
First of all the Original tasted like the mini cinnamon sugar donuts that you get at KDays – only better, way better. All of the other donuts were a hit with us too. Made to perfection and served while still warm, the freshness of the donuts was apparent in every tasty bite.
Pricing specifically for the donuts was reasonable at $2.25 for a regular donut and $2.75 for a filled donut. At times there are also specialty donuts available and prices vary.
Coffee, espresso, and other hot beverage prices were comparable in price to other places in the Strathcona/Whyte Ave area. You can see the full price list on their Facebook page here.
