One of our favourite places to go to in the summer is Discovery Canyon in Red Deer. Located just 1.5 hours South of Edmonton, not only is this a great day trip during the summer but it’s also free! Here’s everything you need to know before you go.
It Opens The First Weekend In June
Well, that’s the plan – but we also live in Alberta so as long as the weather cooperates then should be good. Discovery Canyon is open 7 days a week from 9am-9pm however it is also weather permitting. Make sure you’re following them on Facebook to get live updates for when the weather is questionable.
The Best Time To Go
In my personal experience, going on a weekday when it first opens and around dinner time or shortly after has been pretty successful! Also, those overcast but still equally warm days can be pretty good as well.
Bring Your Own Tube
If you’re bringing your own Tube if can only be between 30 inches – 50 inches, anything bigger and you’ll be asked to remove it. Also, towable and rafts are not allowed.
Don’t have your own tube? No problem, you can rent tubes for $5 until 8 pm and you will need photo ID for the rental. You can pay for your rental with cash, debit, and credit cards.
Bring Snacks And Drinks
Avoid the hangry and stay hydrated by packing some snacks and drinks with you. There are several picnic tables close to the water as well as green space and beach to sit on. You can also find some tables at their new playground.
A concession is also on site which offers several drinks and snack options should you need something! Cash, debit, and credit are accepted!
You can find Discovery Canyon at 3800 River Bend Drive and we’re counting down the days until June!
