Winter Family Fun! Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Fête

You’re invited to enjoy the artistic panache, cultural stories and virtual workshops at Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Fête, presented by Arts on the Ave.

Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Fête

Taking place (entirely outside) from February 5th-14th, this year’s theme is Fiddle & Fables and will see the seven Alberta Avenue district community leagues, as well as Borden Park, transformed into a Winter Wonderland.

Deep Freeze

Each community league location will feature fables from a community member and will be represented by installations, sound, music, ice sculptures, and more. All of the leagues that are participating will also be hosting Fiddle and Skate from 1 pm-9 pm on February 6th, 7th, 13th, & 14th.  (Current AHS & City of Edmonton guidelines will be followed)

At Borden Park, along with several light installations, you will find the Deep Freeze Big Screen which will show a 90-minute loop of performances from past events.

Deep Freeze

All details including hours of operation for each location, where to find each of the installations, featured fables, and more can be found in the downloadable map and program on the Deep Freeze website

Enjoy The Festival At Home

You’re invited to join the Facebook live Deep Freeze Kitchen Party this Sunday, February 7th! Starting at 1 pm enjoy music from the Métis, French Canadian, and Ukrainian cultures, from Myhre’s Music, led by top Canadian fiddler, Daniel Gervais and friends Roger Dallaire, Byron Myhre, and Alfie Myhre!

Over the course of the festival, Deep Freeze will also be releasing virtual DIY Videos so that you can enjoy some of the activities from the comfort of your own home! Videos will include:

  • Finger Weaving & the Métis Sash
  • Hoop Dance
  • Creton Meat Spread Recipe
  • Johnny’s Beet Borscht

When visiting any of the Deep Freeze locations mask are encouraged and all those in attendance are asked to follow AHS guidelines including staying 2 meters apart and staying within your family cohort.

As always Deep Freeze is FREE to attend! Donations will be accepted via the colourful donation tubes at each location. You can also donate via deepfreezefest.ca/donate

Have you ever heard of a Lollipop moment? It’s the realization that we ALL have the opportunity to change the world and be leaders every single day. This is something that is hard for most of us to even consider because when most people think of change or leaders, you think it has to come from somewhere grandiose. I’m guilty of thinking this too, and it’s something that I actively work towards changing every single day. Here’s to celebrating more of the Lollipop moments. Feel free to tag someone in the comments who has had an impact in your life.
