Geocaching is one of my favourite things to do with my kids when the weather is nice outside. Not only is it a great way to enjoy some fresh air it’s also a FREE activity that can be done anywhere!
What You Need To Know About Geocaching
Did you know that there are 4,267 geocaches that are hidden around Edmonton? Here’s what you need to know for this real-life treasure hunt!
Armed with a smartphone, first, you will need to download the Geocaching App. This app is available for both Android and iPhone and has both free and paid options ($12-$37). With the paid options, you have more access to advanced Geocaches, advanced searches, offline maps, and more.
The app will tell you which Geocaches are close to you, and even gives you the level of difficulty. Once you find it, don’t forget to log in on your app!
Don’t forget to bring some trinkets (see suggestions below) to trade.
Most Geocaches also have a logbook for you to sign, so make sure you bring a pen too!
And lastly, given our current pandemic situation, don’t forget to bring along the hand sanitizer!
Want to create your own Geocache and hide it? You can find tips for creating and hiding your Geocache here.
Trinket Ideas
Because Geocaching can be done all over I keep a little baggie in my vehicle filled with items that are perfect for adding to the Geocaches that you find. Some ideas for what you can bring along, include:
- Miniature toys (smaller than a Kinder surprise)
- Marbles
- Fortunes/Quotes/Jokes printed on small pieces of paper
- Stickers
- Character bandaids
