In just a little over 2 weeks school starts, and this year Carter will be starting kindergarten. This is his first school experience and while there can be lots of scary things about the first day of school there are also a lot of fun experiences and these are some of my favourite ways to capture them!!
#1 – Carter is definitely excited to start school, but I on the other hand have been a weepy mess. My first born, how did we get here so fast? It’s only fitting that taking a picture like this is my first pick.
#2 – A beginning of the school year time capsule. Take momentos from your summer (we are using some saved camp site tickets), pictures, art and other little knick knacks to put into the time capsule. Seal it and open it at the end of the school year to see what has changed. I love this idea, but I also love reminiscing!
#3 – I love the idea of doing a an interview page with Carter. I recently came into some interview pages that I did when I was younger and it is so much fun to read about my hopes and dreams. It really is also the point in our life where we dream big. No ocean is too big! The paper that I found from when I was younger, said I was going to marry Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys.. 🙂 (Link includes a free printable)
#4 – A special first day of school meal. I am not a morning person so I will not be doing a stack of pancakes shaped in a “K” or anything like that! Dinner on the other hand – Let us eat steak!!! (Seriously that is what Carter chose…)
#5 – The idea of creating a school binder is awesome! This one also has an interview page, with a few different questions, such as favourite books, tv shows, & shoe sizes. Plus calendars to document any big events that happen throughout the year. The best part is that the school binder can be used year after year.
Do you have other first day of school traditions that you do with your children? I would love to hear about them.

We always have a night before first day picture the boys put on the outfit they will be wearing and their new backpacks and shoes and have their picture taken individually and all together. This is our first year with 3 boys so it should be a gong show! They usually start with oatmeal or pancakes, which ever they want and then I drive them to school the first day is usually the easiest because I have months to prepare!

I of course take his picture before we leave the house. He holds a sign that says first day of the grade the date and then some fun facts. This year we did his favorite food color and what he wanted to be when he grows up. I also have a fun afternoon activity, something simple. This year I greeted him with three cans of silly string so him and me and his father could have a silly string fight!

I love these traditions! Now that I have my daughter I’m looking for ways to make her life more enjoyable and I think traditions do just that! Thanks for sharing.
