Baby box program comes to Alberta
Starting in January the ‘Welcome to Parenthood’ Baby Box campaign will be piloted in Alberta with 1,500 new babies. A similar program has been provided in Finland since 1938 and has proven to have dropped the infant mortality rate to 3.3 per thousand births (one of the lowest rates in the world).
The program in Alberta will be provided by The Baby Box Company and will include a mattress and a few basics such as breast pads, a brain-developing children’s book by a Canadian author and a “Crib-Side Assistance” resource for dads to encourage paternal bonding.
While Canada as a whole doesn’t rank very high in infant mortality compared to other countries across the world, I can definitely see the Baby Box benefiting some communities. Not only in Alberta but across Canada.
Other options are also available from the online store that is supplying the Alberta campaign. You can purchase a basic ‘Bed in a Box’ all the way to ‘The every mother counts box‘ plus a few other options in between.
What about you? What do you think about the program coming to Alberta?
