Why Buying And Selling Second Hand Makes Perfect Sense

*Updated Dec 2020

As a big supporter of Outgrown it Sales it’s no secret that I love various ways to save money on kids’ items and other everyday household items. Places like Poshmark, Facebook marketplace, local buy & sells, Kijiji, and online consignment are all great avenues to do some second-hand shopping.

How Buying and Selling Second Hand Helps

The Kijiji second-hand index identified that in 2018, the average person in Canada earned $961 and saved $723 from participating in the second-hand economy. In 2018 alone, $27.3 billion was put back into the Canadian and local economy which also reduced the number of items going into our landfills.

In terms of how this helps on an even more local Edmonton level, buying and selling second-hand helps to keep money in our community. Businesses like Bissell Thrift Store, Find, and Weehelp Foundation sells items that are donated. Even Outgrown it Sales, and community garage sales are organized to help raise money for a new school park or other school activities. Mind-blowing and genius.

It’s Never Too Late To Get Started

As you are starting a much-needed purge, cleaning out your closet, or evaluating your kid’s toy selection think about what you don’t need and if you too could make a couple of bucks off of it. On the flip side if you know that you need a certain item check your local buy-sell pages first to see if you can find what you need.

Whether you just need to make some pocket change for your coffee a day habit or something else, buying and selling second hand really does makes sense.
