It’s true what they say, the best festivals are the cold ones so it makes sense that Ice on Whyte is a festival that you’ll definitely want to check out with the family!
As one of only 3 Professional Ice Carving Competitions in Canada, the Ice on Whyte Festival is happening in Edmonton January 25th-28th & February 1st & 4th. Whether you’ve been before or not here are some tips for making your experience with the kids awesome!
Avoid the lineups and get your tickets online
General admission family tickets are available for just $20! This includes admission for 2 adults and 2 kids. If you’ve got kids 14+ or are interested yourself you can also purchase Behind the Scenes tickets at $7/each where you can meet the ice carvers, see their creations up close and learn all about the ice carving process.

Plan your visit
Checking out the amazing ice sculptures, exploring the children’s play area, ice carving lessons on the weekends and more – planning your time there can help to make the experience go smoothly and make it so that you don’t have to lug around anything extra (like any crafts) for the whole time.
Bring a hot drink
Hot chocolate, coffee, tea – whichever you like don’t forget the hot drinks to keep you warm! The Contigo travel mugs that we picked up this past week during our Costco trip will work perfectly for just this and if you’re looking to grab something while you’re there Meat Street Pies will have pies, coffee, and gourmet hot chocolate.
Layer Up
Living in Alberta, we can have some pretty unpredictable weather nice one day and -30 the next. Dressing in layers makes it easy to peel a layer off when you get too hot, and you can always put it back on when you’re cold.
It’s accessible
Throughout the festival, there are walkways as wells pathways in the snow making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs (with assistance).
You can find Ice on Whyte on Whyte Avenue and Gateway Blvd in Old Strathcona. If you’re driving, there is parking available in the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market parking lot at Gateway Blvd (103 Street) and 85 Avenue.
