A Getaway to The Cabins at Yowochas – Fox Den Cabin Review

Last week YWCA Edmonton Camp Yowochas opened up their newest option for Edmonton and area families to enjoy the outdoors, The Cabins at Yowochas.

The 2 newly updated cabins include a Yurt, which is your destination for a completely unplugged in nature experience, and The Fox Den Cabin, a modern and cozy cabin and also where we spent a night.

One of the things that I love about both of these cabins is that they each accommodate up to 6 people. As a family of 5, this is sometimes hard to find.

The Fox Den is currently accepting reservations up until April 30, 2021, the cost is $125/night! The Yurt is yet to be open but will be once the wood-burning stove has been installed.

Staying in The Fox Den

When you enter the Fox Den there are 2 sets of bunk beds, and a dresser in the room to the left, and to the right is a double bed and table, with seating for 6 people.

The cabin is heated with an electric heater on a thermostat and we wondered how cold or cozy it would be. We were however pleasantly surprised as it kept both of the rooms at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

There is also no running water in the cabin, but there is a heated indoor bathroom close by, which is your assigned bathroom for the whole stay. It’s also your source for potable water.

I highly suggest braving the cold for an outdoor fire, especially if it’s a clear night. The view of the stars when we were outside was spectacular, and I’m glad we were all able to enjoy it as a family.

What’s Included

When you visit The Cabins at Yowochas you will be provided with firewood for your campfire and an outdoor camp stove with fuel. Inside the cabin, you will find light bedding as well as plates, bowls, and eating utensils.

Supplies and items that you will need to bring with you include food and beverages, a cooler for your food, weather-appropriate clothing, just to name a few. Find the full list of suggested items to bring here.

Exploring The Property

When you arrive you will be given a map of the whole property which spans 50 acres. There is also a large wayfinding map close to your cabin which will tell you about the trails. If you’re looking for a good workout I highly suggest visiting 91 Steps to Doom. It’s actually quite doable, and you’ll feel great when you get to the top.

If you’re a morning sunrise type of person, I also highly suggest you get up for that and walk to the lake too!

Family Fun Days

If you’re looking for a more guided experience, Camp Yowochas also offers Family Fun Days which are a great way for families to spend time together in the outdoors. There are a variety of activities that you can choose from which include nature hikes, learning to build fires and shelters, outdoor cooking, orienteering, low ropes, and many other adventures.

Up to a maximum of 15 people from the same cohort, groups can attend Family Fun Days. The cost is $35/person, and kids 3 and under are free.

The Yowochas Learning Academy

If your child is registered for virtual or distance learning, The Yowochas Learning Academy is offering, 2, 3, and 5 days options for small groups for drop-off daily programming. This is available to students who are 5-15 and enrolled in kindergarten to grade 9.

Daily activities will include working on all required school work as well as a variety of outdoor activities.

All proceeds from our cabin rentals help support Camp Yowochas, a year-round outdoor education centre established in 1916 on Treaty Six territory. Camp Yowochas is operated by YWCA Edmonton, which helps vulnerable women and families in our community and is a powerful voice for gender equity.
