The Silver Skate Festival is another great winter festival to check out with the family!
Silver Skate Festival 2019
Every yeat Hawrelak Park is transformed into a winter wonderland for the Silver Skate Festival. Taking place February 8th-18th here are some things to check out with the family!
Family Fun Zone
For the duration of the festival, the family fun zone is open 4pm-8pm on weeknights and 1pm-8pm on weekends. Activities include:
- Free Hot Chocolate (Feb 16-19) 1pm-5pm
- Ice Slide
- Snow Maze
- Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides (Feb 9,10,16-18) 1pm-5pm

Try Out Winter Sports
The Silver Skate Festival will have plenty of opportunities for you to try out some fun winter sports! This includes seeing how fast you can go speed skates or trying out snowshoeing or cross country skiing. There will also be some games of hockey, broomball, and jam can curing taking place throughout.
Take A Helicopter Ride
This isn’t free – but it’s the first time that helicopter rides will be offered at the festival. The helicopter rides will be taking place Feb 9th & 10th and the cost for a 10-minute ride is $80 for up to 3 people. Tickets for the helicopter ride have to be pre-booked/pre-purchased. Watch Teams Compete
There are several sports event for you to watch and cheer on the participants and even some that you can still register for. These include:
- Winter Triathalon & Ice Duathlon
- Frisbee on Ice
- Dead Cold Run
- Snowshoe Races
- Northgate Skate Races
- Kortebann
Folk Trail
On both Saturday and Sunday, evening during the festival, join the nomadic performers as they tell stories about The Land of The Golden Apples. During this time you can also make your own lantern and join them on the lantern walk.
Live Music
Who doesn’t love live music? Perfect for the whole family to enjoy – take some time to relax or move around to stay warm. This year there are many great live performances!
Heritage Village
Check out the interpretative Cree Winter Camp during the weekends, which will include blacksmithing demonstrations, Bannock, as well as Parks Canada sharing about camping. Cabane À Sucre will also be available for purchase for $3.75 ea. or 2 for $7.00
Fire Sculptures
During the day of each weekend, teams work together to create and put together sculptures which are then burned that night! You can catch the fire sculpture on Saturday & Sunday nights during the festival at 7:45 pm.
