Updated March 2021

My family loves camping, but for the majority of the time, we are mostly looking for family-friendly campgrounds near Edmonton.

Family-Friendly Campgrounds Near Edmonton

Leaving on a Friday afternoon, and coming home on a Sunday doesn’t leave much time to go very far. Here are some of our favourites and also some that we’ll be checking out this summer too!

Ol’ MacDonald’s Resort
We’ve camped at this private campground a few times in the past and it’s always been a hit with the kids! Activities that are available include hayrides, mini-golf, visiting farm animals, merry-go-round, and of course a private beach. You can find this campground 2 hours South of Edmonton.

Lindbrook Star Gazer Campground
It’s not very often that you find outdoor pools at campgrounds in Alberta, let alone close to Edmonton but Lindbrook Star Gazer does. Perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day,  this small private campground is also very well maintained, has a small park for kids to play, and also has a few basic items that you can purchase at the office.

Wabamun Provincial Campground
Located about an hour West of Edmonton, one of our favourite things to do while camping here is exploring their trails! The beach which is also at the campground is one of the closest to Edmonton. The town of Wabamun is also close by and has some great places to stop for Ice Cream, a spray park with a playground, and a boat launch area.

Elevated Experience Camping
This private campground is located close to Drayton Valley and is just over 90 minutes southwest of Edmonton. We’ve never been here before, but it’s on our list for camping this summer and we can not wait! Not only is this campground nestled along the shores of the North Saskatchewan River but they also have weekly family and child programming, mini-golf, bike rentals, and plenty of space to explore.

This campground was introduced to us at the end of the camping season last year, and it’s definitely on our camping list for this year. Bonus, it’s about an hour south of Edmonton and there is also a beach/swimming area. Other amenities include hiking trails, washrooms, a concession stand, and fishing!

Carson Pegasus Provincial Campground
This is definitely one of our favourite campgrounds to go to each year. Within the campsite, there is a small beach area with a park as well as the Whitecourt River Slides which are under a 30-minute drive away. You can find this campground a little over 2 hours north-west of Edmonton. (Please note that due to Covid, it is not known if the River Slides will be open this summer)

Red Lodge Provincial Campground
Located a little over 2 hours south of Edmonton, Red Lodge Campground has amazing sites! While there is a river that you can float down located at the campsite, it’s a little cold for our liking but none-the-less the kids still had fun! If you’re looking to venture outside of the campground for a few hours Discovery Wildlife Park and DINOS Centre are located in Innisfail.

Aspen Beach Provincial Park
If you’re looking for a campground that has a great beach close by, this is one of our favourites. The water is the perfect depth for little ones and there is a park right by the beach too. If you’re looking to venture out from this campground for the day, this list of outdoor pools, beaches, and river slides is the perfect list to have on hand. You can find the Aspen Beach campground just under 2 hours south of Edmonton.
